Some of the first Padrone peppers of the year...pick, rinse, saute quickly in a little olive oil, sprinkle with salt and eat! Use the stem for a handle...yum!
Here are a few photos of recent blooms in Davis. It's difficult to enjoy them as the air has been really awful due to the wildfires burning all around northern California...none of them near enough to worry about burning here but the smoke is pretty much disgusting. This isn't the first time we've had fire smoke here but it isn't very common either. Add to the smoke multiple triple digit heat days (106.5 today!) and the garden isn't a good place to be right now. Reading garden blogs will reveal that pretty much all gardeners suffer/endure gifts of nature of one type or another...we may not enjoy our own particular gifts but we do seem to acclimate to what we're given. The Austin bloggers talk about closing up shop to a certain degree in the heat of summer, midwesterners have their humidity, thunderstorms and tornadoes, there are ice storms many places around the country and that doesn't even get into the insect problems or things like poison ivy. But being the compulsive/dedicated gardeners that we seem to be we just carry on...knowing that this too will pass. For myself, I know (please, please, please) that the smoke will clear and I know that the heat will not keep up...we should be back into the 90's (hey...it's a dry heat!) by Sunday.

Pretty flowers. Its nice to see something is surviving the smoke. It was 113 here today. It is smokey and hot....not good to be outside. Can't wait to see under 100 temps again(-:
Your flowers don't seem to be suffering too much in the heat and smoke. That combination sounds awful, I'm impressed you even got out there to take the pictures!
Here's hoping that smoke dissipates, soon!

Your blooms are lovely! I can sympathize, as we have wildfires here in the mountains of Idaho every year, usually starting in August, until it rains in the fall. The combination of heat and smoke can be pretty hard to take. Hope your air is better very soon, so you can enjoy your garden!
Leslie, we get fires in August many years, so I feel your pain. Terrible that it is in the middle of gardening season. Terrible that it hurts so many people. Praying for your state.~~Dee
Leslie, such lovely blooms have to give you hope during times like this. When I see my plants bravely blooming despite the heat and humidity, I remind myself that I can shoulder on as well. Buona fortuna!
I surprised you didn't mention Midwest blizzards too. (Doesn't that make you feel better.) Your flowers are lovely, especially that Daylily. Is it an evergreen or dormant type?

I feel like an Austin slacker with only 97 degrees to report this afternoon - it sounds awful there, and even if the fires aren't near, the tension must be awful!
Henry Mitchell complained long ago that "It is not nice to garden anywhere.." and so far in 2008 that seems to be true, although your lilies are carrying on in defiance of the smoke and heat.

I'm sorry to hear that your air is so polluted with smoke from the fires and that it's so hot. Hopefully your garden and peppers do well in the heat! Lovely photos.
Very pretty flowers... but so sorry to hear about all of your heat and smoke, Leslie! Hopefully that goes away soon.
