Post Storm: Project Number One

One of my favorite little vignettes in the back garden was this small table where various succulents have decided to hang together and be happy. They really needed to have been put away for winter but fall has just arrived and I was so happy with the way they look that I was trying to squeeze a few more weeks of enjoyment from them. I mean...it's only October! Once they are relegated to the patio shelves out of harm's way for the winter they will be pretty much out of sight.

Here are those same plants this morning after an unusually early winter storm barreled through knocking out power to many homes (including mine), toppling trees, snapping branches, spreading leaves and, sadly, knocking over tables of unprepared succulent growers. Amazingly, only one pot broke and I think all the plants are there and not shoved up against the fence somewhere.

That was some storm!

It sounded really odd to me that in CA you need to take plants in for the winter, but now I understand. Poor little plants!

I hope you weren't without power for too long. I can never get over how beautiful the wisteria is in your garden.

Oh, Leslie! That must have been a doozy of a storm! I hope the plants forgive Mother Nature her harsh treatment of them.

Good to see you back! Sounds like a crazy storm you had there... you probably felt like you were back in Ohio, pulling in plants before a frost, right?! (Not that I know anything about that... ;)

Yes EAL...I'm lucky it was pots of succulents! Although I still need to repot them.
Unfortunately, FGG, the tall one which was an old favorite is the one that broke. The half section of umbrella pot is the half left from a different storm. One might begin to think I should be more careful!
Kathy, it was quite a storm and just unusual because it was so early in the season.
SG...we bring the succulents under cover cause they can do cold but not wet cold. So I keep they fairly dry all winter on the patio.
Hi Sweet Bay...no power for over 7 hours. That was just annoying! But no damage from it luckily.
Cindy...someone was watching out for me so that it was just tough succulents!
Good to be back Kim! I've just been on autopilot for months :) If ONLY I had pulled those poor things before the storm hit!

Good grief - knew you had storms but for some reason thought CA storms would be a different breed...more laid back, ya know?

Good luck with getting the succulents reestablished. Some of mine were okay after our hailstorms but some never recovered...and I sure do understand the sentimental attachments to pots and plants.
