Gray Skies Are Gonna Clear Up...Right?

I'm really not complaining. When I read about the weather that Cindy at My Corner Of Katy
and Dee at Red Dirt Ramblings have been dealing with...as well as many other garden blogger friends who are at least used to freezing cold winters...I really shouldn't complain. But our gray Central Valley January days are just so...gray. And January.
In any case, on this gray January weekend I decided to go out, do a bit of clean up and try to get some work done. The first thing I noticed was that the carrots and beets are doing well and going to need thinning soon. Can't complain about that.

Next, I noticed this stalwart lavender, pinnata buchii, still blooming despite over half the plant being blackened from the December freeze. This part of the plant was protected by warming lights. Can't complain about this either!

I certainly won't complain about the oranges hanging over my fence from the neighboring yard. We've had a few and they are tasty...I'm hoping we enjoy more before any wandering rats discover them.

And I won't complain that on this damp, gray, chilly day I was able to plant some radish seeds and the fava seeds I soaked overnight. We are being warned that February will be unusually rainy. If so and I lose this gamble it will be worth it! But if not...at least I'll have favas and radishes. About which I will not complain.

We are far away from seed planting here. I'm envious! And those oranges. OMG!

Thanks for the shout out, Leslie! I feel for you, too. I can take freezing winter temperatures far better than days on end when it's gray, damp and chilly. I hope you get some sunshine to chase away the blahs. And hey, those carrots and beets look gorgeous. We're usually told not to even try planting carrots because they don't like our weather. This winter they might actually have grown for us!

It seems like unremitting gray is hard to take no matter what the temperature. Arctic cold is easier to take when sunlight is bouncing off the snow.

I won't complain, either, because at least we have snow cover now to insulate plants from this cold weather. And if you dress for it, it isn't so bad! Plus, I have time to browse seed catalogs. Yes, nothing to complain about here!.

I like your VPS (veggie protection system), but eww about the rats. It must be wonderful to be sowing seeds already.

I got that cage after years of make-do cages. Without it the sparrows will eat all the young starts.

The cage caught my eye, too, Leslie - and love how the oranges hang into your yard!

Hope you get some sun soon.

So right.....nothing to complain about in your yard.....especially those oranges. But I think it's okay to on occasion complain about the gray.

Interesting post you got here. It would be great to read something more concerning that theme. Thanks for giving this info.

Leslie, thanks for the link love. You're not complaining at all. Simply being realistic. It *is* gray, and gray is hard. Been gray here all day, but at least we got some rain (no snow!)~~Dee
