It Wasn't Just About The Plants

One of the constraints of a small garden is that you can’t grow all of the plants you’d like to grow. As if being held back by soil type and climate limitations (not to mention those of a financial nature) wasn’t  enough, when one has limited space one must constantly edit one’s desires simply due to lack of exposed soil surface. When I was in Buffalo last weekend for the third annual gathering of garden bloggers I found myself drawn to one piece of garden art after the other. And that's when another unhappy truth occurred to me...you can't have all the garden art you like either when your space is small. Not unless you'd like the neighbors to think you're having a yard sale or cleaning the garage.

Most gardeners like to accessorize their gardens with art and Buffalo gardeners are really good at it. Colorful pots, fountains, statuary, bird houses, even tea cups were among the items that caught my eye and have me wanting to get home and take a fresh look at what lives in my own garden.
Some gardeners did have what might be considered an overabundance of decorative items but it pretty much all worked...and was great food for thought.

I wondered about that Leslie~The gardens were jammed packed with goodies and exuberant flowers....but there's only so much space! Maybe having a short summer helps! I loved getting more time with you! gail

It worked so well for them because of the size and abundance of the plants. In most gardens, it was impossible to see more than 1 or 2 pieces at a time because the views were screened. I think that's the key to it.

Did you just hear me squeal? Because you KNOW how boring the side of my garage looks as you make your way back to the grape arbor... and now I have an idea of how to deal with it! I've been thinking about something different than a trellis, but very much like flat artwork... so I think I'm taking the idea of the tree on the side of the garage, adding it to the decorative latticework that someone else showed (that echoed a leaf shape in a porch railing) and finding my answer. :)

I took a picture of that wall too! Something similar may show up on my corner of Katy. It was interesting to hear that the gardener painted the tree on after hanging the birdhouses. She placed them where she wanted them, left the hooks in place and removed the birdhouses to do the painting, and then put them back. The creativity of gardeners is wonderful, isn't it?

I don't have much by way of ornament in my garden, partly from lack of confidence, but I was really inspired by the art and ornaments in Buffalo's gardens. It was great to meet you! I'm now a regular in your garden.

Love it when the bloggers who went to Buffa10 comment on others' posts and analyze the photos.

The green bottle tree is intriguing...there are some in my garage, washed, saved, and covered with dust.
I really enjoy visiting gardens with lots of decorations but don't think I can live with it, Leslie!
